The Monastery Road

  3. 10:30Drive to Gangtok along switchbacks of green stone.

  5. 16:00Rumtek monastery courtyard. A cat crosses, deliberately.
  6. 19:00Dinner of thukpa and grilled trout. Snowfall, briefly.

Into the Forest

Dooars, Days 7–8

  1. 05:30Pre-dawn jeep into Gorumara. Fog, hooves, grass.
  2. 07:45Watchtower coffee. A herd crossing, in single file.
  3. 11:00Return to camp. Breakfast under the gulmohar.
  4. 15:30River walk along the Murti. Birding, in low voices.
  5. 18:30A bonfire is lit. The cook plays the dotara.
  6. 22:00Lights out. The forest, distinctly audible.
