The Ascent

Darjeeling, Days 1–3

  1. 07:00—Sunrise over Kanchenjunga. Breakfast served on the veranda.
  2. 09:30—A walk through Happy Valley tea estate. Midmorning tasting.
  3. 12:30—Lunch at the bungalow — clear soup, momos, lemon rice.
  4. 15:00—Toy train descent to Ghoom. A short pause at Batasia loop.
  5. 18:00—Tea on the lawn. The hills withdraw into mist.
  6. 20:30—A quiet supper. The piano plays, faintly, in the next room.

Chapter Two

The Monastery Road

Sikkim, Days 4–6

FIELD NOTES — 02•Days 4–6
  1. 06:30—Morning bell at Pemayangtse. Stillness, then chant.
  2. 08:15—Butter tea and barley bread under a painted ceiling.
  3. 10:30—Drive to Gangtok along switchbacks of green stone.
  4. 13:00—Lunch at a roadside tea house. Pork momos. Soup.
  5. 16:00—Rumtek monastery courtyard. A cat crosses, deliberately.
  6. 19:00—Dinner of thukpa and grilled trout. Snowfall, briefly.

Chapter Three

Into the Forest

Dooars, Days 7–8

FIELD NOTES — 03•Days 7–8
  1. 05:30—Pre-dawn jeep into Gorumara. Fog, hooves, grass.
  2. 07:45—Watchtower coffee. A herd crossing, in single file.
  3. 11:00—Return to camp. Breakfast under the gulmohar.
  4. 15:30—River walk along the Murti. Birding, in low voices.
  5. 18:30—A bonfire is lit. The cook plays the dotara.
  6. 22:00—Lights out. The forest, distinctly audible.
